Frequently Asked Questions
We are trying to gather the most common questions which we are asked about our system and present you with the answers.
19. What do you mean by the term Siccόna Accessories? And what is included in these?
Siccόna Accessories cover the range of Siccona solutions, they are specially constructed elements that enable the architect or building contrator to use Siccόna opening or sliding systems in the way he chooses, without impeding functionality or access.
Currently the Siccόna Accessories range includes:
(a) Set of components for recessing sliding system guide rails consisting of 2mm galvanized profile, height 9.2 cm, which is installed in the floor and is fitted with special channels to allow for water drainage, and 1.5 mm stainless steel profile, which is fitted between the galvanized profile and the guide rail and is intended to protect the guide rail system from corrosion.
(b) Folded guide rails for recessed installation of sliding system outer frames.
(c) Folded guide rails for recessed installation of opening system outer frames.
18. How many years guarantee does the system carry;
Siccona systems are covered by 10 years written warranty. The guarantee covers the critical issues related to the quality of construction - e.g. glazing will not detach or gather moisture internally - as well as the proper functioning of the mechanisms, if used and maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
17. And what kind of handles accompany Siccona systems;
There is an extensive range of knobs and handles to choose from, manufactured by the Convex company, which we have selected as the most suitable because of their visual appearance, their ergonomic functionality, and their overall harmonious compatability with the glazing aesthetics of Siccόna structural systems.
16. And what more does the Siccόna system offer over and above traditional systems?
The first advantage of the Siccόna system, obvious at first glance, is its minimalist, crystal clear, amazingly flat appearance. The passionate application of the modern architectural concept, expressed by the famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with his now famous tenet "Less is more", is clear.
The second major advantage is the system’s superior strength in large openings and heavy weights, as well as its resistance to wind load, impact and thermal shock (sudden temperature changes) and its durability under conditions of very intensive use.
This is because, apart from the high quality of the glazing, it does not merely slide into a frame, but constitutes a completely unified standalone structural component which contributes decisively to the structural compactness of the overall system.
The third major advantage is its exceptional response to the contemporary high standards of energy efficiency. This ability is provided by the enhanced thermal break system and double or triple glazing specially toughened Low-E 5 & 6mm energy efficient glass, as certified by the German institute IFT Rosenheim, well-known throughout Europe for its strict certification standards.
The fourth important advantage of the system Siccona are the multiple options available to the architect or end user. Clients are able to choose for themselves the the ideal combination of specialized features for each opening or project they desire, in terms of energy efficiency, the desired level of insulation, the desired visibility of the glazing, taking security and even burglar or bulletproof protection of the building into account.
Put simply, this means that clients “create” their own Siccόna system, depending on their requirements and preferences. The system offers a uniqueness that no other system offers.
15. Why is the Siccona system ultimately considered to be "all-weather"?
The double-faced Siccόna structural system offers guaranteed all-weather protection - thanks to the almost full coverage of its exterior glazing, heavy duty EPDM-type perimeter seals, as well as its integrated steel perimeter multi-locking mechanism (opening system) or the ultimate in smooth installations offered by Hautau rollers (sliding system).
All elements complement each other in an aesthetically pleasing and perfectly functional way, to create a unified coherent transparent architectural whole.
14. What is the pressure compensation valve and when exactly is it activated?
The two-way valve, automatically compensates for the internal pressure of the air between the glass panels and external atmospheric pressure when the pressure difference between them exceeds 80 millbar.
This is installed in Siccona double glazing systems when Argon gas is not used.
Extreme pressure differences also occur when there is a large difference in altitude between the location of the system’s manufacturing facilities and the location where it is installed (e.g. close to sea level or in a higher mountain location), or when the system is installed in very warm climates.
13. Can the Siccόna sliding system be fully integrated into the floor? And how is water runoff ensured?
In practice, the sliding system guide rail can be fully recessed in the floor leaving only 5mm of the inox roller guide protruding.
To facilitate recessing of the outer frame and ensure efficient water runoff into the waste water system, the Siccόna Accessories range offers a special set of guide rail housings fitted with special holes which permit proper drainage of water into the waste water disposal system.
The housing set consists of 2mm galvanized sheet profile, height 9.2 cm, which is installed in the floor and another 1.5 mm stainless profile section, which is fitted between the galvanized profile and the guide rail and is intended to protect the guide rail system from corrosion.
12. Can the frame of the system be fully recessed in the wall;
Of course. In the Siccόna opening system the outer frame can be fully recessed on the outside, while in the sliding system the installation can be recessed on both sides, interior and exterior.
To facilitate recessed housing of the outer frame, special fold form guide rails are available from the Siccόna Accessories range.
11. What restrictions are there on the size of system installations (size/weight)?
Siccόna opening systems are fitted with a ROTO mechanism capable of supporting loads of up to 130kg. This means that the maximum glass panel dimensions for double glazing are 3.25m² and for triple glazing 2.5m².
Siccóna sliding systems use a HAUTAU mechanism which is capable of supporting loads with a total weight of up to 400kg. This means that maximum glass panel dimensions for double glazing are 10m² and for triple glazing 7.5m².
10. What finishes are available?
Siccona Systems are offered in three distinctive timeless colours: anodized black, and white and grey powder- coated.
9. Who carries out the installation?
Responsibility for installation of the architectural framing systems is assigned to the Center-al company and its authorized network of expert associate installers.
8. Where are the products manufactured?
Today Siccona systems are exclusively made by Centeral, Halkida, at an altitude of 50m. This ensures effective quality control of production.
7. Which institution has certified the system?
The Siccόna system is accredited by the German institute IFT Rosenheim, which is the most rigorous and reliable European certification institute.
According to IFT Rosenheim certifications, Siccόna fully complies with the highest specification requirements of EU directive EN 14352-1, with regard to its energy efficient behaviour (thermal insulation), as well as wind load resistance, water proofing and draught penetration.
6. What are the heat transfer coefficients (U-values) of the system?
For triple glazing systems with dimensions of 1.00 x 2.20 m, the U value is 1.26W/m²K. For larger openings the U-value of Siccona systems would be even lower.
For double glazing systems with dimensions of 1.00 x 2.20 m, the U value is 1.82W/m²K. For larger openings the U-value of Siccona systems would be even lower.
5. What kind of glazing is available from the Siccόna product range?
Standard Siccόna systems utilize toughened (tempered) Energy Efficient Glass (Low-E), 6-6 mm for double glazing and 6-5-6 mm in the case of triple glazing.
The result of this special treatment is that the system offers the following:
- Unparalleled smooth flat surface.
- Top quality transparency and clarity.
- Increased mechanical resistance - 5 times more resistant than plain glass.
- Top standard energy efficient coating.
- Effective durability under extreme temperature fluctuations - no danger of thermal impact damage
- Safe shatter - in the unlikely case that the glass should shatter, it will break into very small harmless pieces - smaller than 0.5cm2 each.
This is of course, the standard version Siccόna system glazing. In addition to this, the Siccόna structural system offers other choices in glazing.
The system offers the architect or user the ability to make individual choices and select the ideal combination of specialized features for each opening or project as desired, and to create their own custom-designed Siccόna system, depending on needs, requirements and preferences with respect to:
- Increased energy efficiency (U-value) by filling the glazing chambers with argon.
- The right level of soundproofing
- The desired visibility: transparent, semi-transparent (one-way mirror), opaque (milky).
- Burglar or bulletproof protection with multi-panel windows.
4. Is Siccόna's aluminium profile thermal break type?
Of course. Siccόna opening systems, both double and triple glazing, have two 24mm polyamide insert layers, and the corresponding double and triple glaze sliding system has two 19mm polyamide inserts.
3. How is the structural support of the Siccόna system secured?
Structural support of the system is achieved by the combination of special aluminum profile we create as the basic frame support of the glazing and the use of a special sealant, the 895 Silicone Structural Glazing Sealant produced by Dow Corning.
This adhesive sealant is approved by EOTA (European Organization for Technical Approvals) for bonding glass to metal.
2. And what is the basic, the essential difference of the Siccόna system compared to traditional systems?
In the Siccόna system the glazing is a structural element that reaches from edge to edge across the entire outer and inner surface of the glass panel. Thus the system acquires a fully integrated compact structure - instead of the usual loose-fitting installation where the glazing simply slides into the aluminum frame.
This means unparalleled functionality, extremely high durability, complete weatherproofing and at the same time adds a unique aesthetic perfection to the overall architectural design of any building.
Thus the now famous maxim of the famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, "Less is more", finds its the ultimate expression in Siccόna’s range of aluminum system solutions for architectural applications.
1. What are the innovatory aspects of Siccόna Systems?
The Siccόna System is a Structural double-face system, double or triple glazed.
Today, in the European market, there are a variety of double or triple glazing systems available. But there are no fully integrated casement** or sliding sliding systems!
The development of the Siccόna system was based on the innovative «Structural» technology, which has been widely used worldwide with great success for years now in curtain wall applications internationally.
This advanced technology is applied to simple, traditional systems for architectural applications, for the first time in Greece and Europe.
And indeed in the Siccόna system this technology is applied to both sides - exterior and interior - thus creating a double-face structural opening system.
